Keep It Simple Stupid.... I'm always amazed at how folks in tech tolerate complexity in the name of technology advancement... i'm a mac bigot -- why? not because i bought an ipod and i think Jobs is cool -- actually neither. I've used Macs since 1985/86 -- why? well i thought it was a toy when it first came out then i saw a demo of PageMaker 1.0 on a Mac Plus output to a Laser Writer. wow - conversion city. i couldn't believe that someone non-artistic as me could do amazing things.
talent+tools = cool stuff. yes, i had a little talent, the tool was awesome and man we did some cool stuff. since then i've stayed with the Mac (even dark times like system 7, 8 and powerbook 5300s....(or was it the 3400s -- either way OUCH). I've made a living doing presentations on the mac for over 10 years -- people paid me well... and i had fun (ok, hour 26 in a row of making powerpoint changes for the zillionth time -- not so fun).
but -- since then -- have they figured out simplicity.... movies, photos (my wife's imac has over 25,000 photos in iphoto and it works like a champ).... all those photos on our tv via apple tv -- amazing.... the photo books you make in about 15 minutes... simple and amazing... the movie for grandma's 90th -- a few days -- and on my laptop no less... amazing...
so KISS -- yes i love it -- Apple, Tivo, few others do this well. Adobe's not bad. sony, moto and others make good products -- but not simple and elegant. Ever try to hook up a network with linksys, dlink or others? ouch. ever try to navigate a comcast DVR? windows? miserable...
if we want everyone to have high speed broadband, do video chat, have mobile web surfing, and the like -- we need to make it simple -- stupid.....;-)...
yet -- one more feature -- one more button.... can i have a universal remote that has less than 20 buttons on it? can i have one remote? resist the urge you product managers -- go simple -- go elegant. please.....
